Degrees: BSc(First Class), MSc(Research), PhD, DSc, Dr hc, all in engineering, applied science and technology. An engineering career in university teaching and research with an emphasis on measurement,instrumentation, sensors and actuators and related signal processing for many measurands, industrial sectors and basic metrology. Employment started as a junior research scientist at GCHQ, followed by membership of the academic staff at the University of Manchester, UMIST, the Open University and Brunel University London. Director of the Brunel Centre for Manufacturing Metrology(BCMM), Brunel University 1986-2007 (created and established BCMM in 1986). Hewlett Packard Professor of Manufacturing Metrology 1986-1991. Professor of Manufacturing Metrology, Brunel University 1991-2007. Emeritus Professor of Manufacturing Metrology, Brunel University London 2003 to date. Vice President and Trustee of the professional engineers Institution of Engineering and Technology(IET) 2010-2013 (~170,000 members worldwide). Awarded five fellowships of engineering, applied science and technology professional institutions. Awarded three doctorates. Over 350 publications, including five books. A number of papers received awards. Supervised some 100 research dissertations and theses. Collaborated with over 30 industrial companies and organisations at home and abroad, including in India, Japan, China,Thailand as well as in several European countries. Received many research awards and grants from UK and EU institutions and from industry.Awarded the UK Metrology for World Class Manufacturing Award in 1995 as the Champion of Metrology(award supported by NPL, EPSRC and British industry). A Queen's Scout. Methodist Local Preacher 1965 to date. Methodist Honorary Research Fellow and Visiting Scholar Sarum College Salisbury 2017+. Lead Debate Organiser at Lansdowne Crescent Methodist Church, Malvern, Worcestershire 2014-2018. Director and Trustee of the Mercian Educational Trust (multi-academy trust) 2017+. Trustee of charity EngageMalvern 2017+. Parliamentary candidate for Altrincham and Sale in 1970 General Election. Married with two daughters, four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
