Ranon Teller

Senior Rabbi, Congregation Brith Shalom
He/Him · Houston, TX, USA

Ranon Teller is a visionary spiritual leader whose deep passion for Jewish music, education, and community engagement has defined his approach to religious leadership. With a background in television writing and music, he has cultivated a unique ability to inspire his congregation through creative worship, dynamic educational programming, and meaningful community involvement. As the senior rabbi at Congregation Birth Shalom in Houston, he has shaped prayer services, strengthened membership engagement, and fostered connections within the Jewish community and the wider society. His innovative leadership continues to bridge tradition and modernity, ensuring that Jewish life remains vibrant, inclusive, and spiritually fulfilling. Raised in a home deeply rooted in Orthodox Judaism, Ranon was the second of three children born into a family where faith, learning, and community were central values. His father was a respected rabbi and scholar, and his mother was devoted to Jewish education, instilling a love for tradition in the household. He attended an Orthodox Day School for his early education before continuing his studies at a prominent yeshiva high school outside Chicago. Determined to deepen his understanding of Jewish teachings, he moved to Israel after high school, immersing himself in advanced Talmud study, Jewish philosophy, theology, and sacred texts. While at an Orthodox yeshiva, he dedicated himself to exploring the intricacies of Jewish law and tradition. However, as he engaged in rigorous religious study, he began to wrestle with deep philosophical questions that would eventually lead him on a journey beyond the confines of the Orthodox framework. As his spiritual and intellectual inquiries expanded, Teller was drawn to the secular world, eager to explore new avenues of creativity and expression. Upon returning to Chicago, he discovered a profound passion for storytelling and creative writing, which led him to pursue a degree in television writing at Columbia College Chicago. His natural talent for crafting compelling narratives earned him an opportunity to work in the television industry, where he wrote and produced a Sunday morning news program. In addition to his work in media, he developed a fascination with blues music, eventually learning to play the guitar and performing in a rhythm and blues band. One of his most unforgettable experiences as a musician was playing on Maxwell Street, the legendary birthplace of Chicago blues. Despite his success in these artistic pursuits, a deep yearning for spiritual fulfillment remained, drawing him back toward his Jewish roots and reigniting his connection to the traditions that had shaped his early life. In 1996, Rabbi Ranon Teller returned to Israel with a renewed sense of purpose, seeking a more holistic and meaningful approach to Jewish practice. No longer confined by the rigid structures of Orthodox fundamentalism, he explored alternative forms of Jewish spirituality, delving into contemporary Chasidic music and the teachings of influential thinkers who emphasized a more inclusive and experiential approach to faith. During this time, he began auditing classes at a Conservative rabbinical school in Jerusalem and participated in an intensive Jewish education training program. Through these experiences, he gained a broader understanding of Jewish leadership and the importance of fostering spiritual engagement through music, education, and communal connection. During this transformative period, he recognized his true calling—to serve as a rabbi who could bridge tradition and innovation, making Jewish practice more accessible and meaningful to diverse individuals. With his path set before him, Ranon returned to the United States in 1998 and embarked on a rigorous academic journey to deepen his knowledge of Jewish education and religious leadership. He enrolled at the University of Judaism, now known as the American Jewish University in Los Angeles, where he dedicated himself to advanced studies in Jewish education and rabbinics. His commitment to scholarly excellence was evident as he pursued his master's degree in education, demonstrating a keen ability to engage with traditional Jewish teachings and contemporary educational methodologies. In 2000, he earned his degree from the Fingerhut School of Education, receiving the prestigious Fingerhut School of Education Award for Outstanding Achievement. His academic achievements reflected his intellectual capabilities and his unwavering dedication to the future of Jewish learning. The culmination of Ranon Teller Rabbi's journey toward the rabbinate came in 2002 when he was officially ordained, marking the beginning of a career devoted to spiritual leadership, education, and community building. His exceptional performance as a student earned him the Chancellor's Award for Academic Excellence and the Ziegler School Award for Excellence in Talmudic Studies, further solidifying his reputation as a devoted scholar and teacher. His rabbinic career has since been defined by his ability to merge traditional Jewish values with modern approaches, creating an inclusive and engaging environment for those seeking deeper spiritual connections. In recognition of his lifelong contributions to Jewish education and leadership, he was honored in May 2022 with an Honorary Doctorate from the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies. Through his work, he remains committed to fostering a vibrant and connected Jewish community, ensuring that faith, music, and education continue to inspire and unite future generations.
